Ost Dunhoth Ahoy

I’ve been busy enough in game, over the last week or so. I’ve completed Stoneheight (tier 2) on my minstrel and on my guardian, completed The Lost Temple (tier 1) on my guardian, and had a bash at the disease wing in Ost Dunhoth (tier 2) on my loremaster. When I say ‘a bash’, I obviously mean that we didn’t get it done. The mechanics of the boss fight (Baleleaf and Dourbark) took a while for our very inexperienced group to get to grips with; we then had a couple of very close attempts before the lateness of the hour caused us to throw the towel in. That said, we’ve already pencilled in another attempt for alter this week.

My kin also had their first post-radiance attempt at the Watcher last week – I took my minstrel for her first vsit to the Vile Maw, and we succeeded after a couple of unlucky wipes. I’m still chasing the helm and shoulders from ‘The Watcher’ armour set, but needless to say, was unlucky with my rolls again on this occasion. As an aside, I’m a firm convert to the ‘No Radiance’ world – all sorts of folks who couldn’t be bothered to grind for radiance gear, are now coming raiding, and enjoying it. It’s all very refreshing, to be honest.

A warden in our kin needed to get his class quest done in Dark Delvings last week too, so I took my guardian along for the trip. We got the warden quest done without much issue, but struggled with Gurvand. I lost count of how many times I got punted off the cliffs to my doom – if only the LoTRO Store sold parachutes ;). Anyhow, in the end we did actually manage to kill Gurvand, in challenge mode too; in the process I completed my last outstanding deeds in DD (on my guardian) and thus picked up the ‘Triumph within the Forsaken Deeps’ deed. I have now completed all deeds in two (Forges & DD) out of the six Moria instances .

Elsewhere, I’ve just about finished Enedwaith on a third toon – my guardian. When I say ‘finished’, I mean hit Kindred with the Algraig and with the Grey Company; plus completed all the quests and epics up to the end of volume 3 book 3. Phew. I’m not sure I’ll do it for a fourth time – I think I’ll be restricting my RK to the Volume 3 epic quest line only.

Enedwaith Reputation Items

Now that I’m gaining kindred status with both the Algraig and the Grey Company [with my various toons], I’ve been taking some interest in the reputation rewards offered by these two Enedwaith factions.

One of the first things I noticed was the duplication of an item – ‘Arthgarab’ – at least in name, if not in stats, between the Grey Company reputation vendor and an item dropped by Istum in Dar Narbugud.

Arthgarab and Arthgarab

Arthgarab and Arthgarab - which is the fake?!

As you can see, Arthgarab is the name of a light armour head-piece in two different forms…the teal version (which I use when radiance is not required) on my LM. The non-teal version comes from the Grey Company. Presumably, the duplicate naming of the Grey Company version is a bug?!

As for the other reputation items offered by the Algraig and the Grey Company, these are the ones that offer the most interest to me (I’m not commenting on cosmetics, emotes, mounts or housing items – just equipable items for use in end-game content)…

The token & heavy shield of ‘Resilience’ are a nice pairing for a guardian:

The Enedwaith token & shield of ‘Warding’ look a good best for a warden (although I’m no warden expert!):

The Ededwaith token and light shield of ‘Perseverance’ are an ok combo for a minstrel:

The Enedwaith token and cloak of Elegance could be used by a variety of classes:

The Grace set isn’t a bad bet for any tactical class:

Christmas Activities

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post, and the Christmas break has seen me busy, in-game.

My rune-keeper is now finally at level cap. Thanks to some time off work before Christmas, I brought her all the way through Lothlorien, hitting ‘kindred’ with the Galadhrim on the way, and also completing volume 2 book 8 of the epic quest line; I then brought her through the Mirkwood starter area, and I’m now questing in Mirkwood proper, while also working on finishing up volume 2.

I have to say, at this stage, that I find the RK a hard class to play at level cap. The lack of a reliable mezz makes for very hard multi-mob pulls, and I find I die much more regularly than with any of my other level 65 toons…that said, my equipment still isn’t as good as I’d like it, as I haven’t ground out an end-game set for her – I’ll probably start looking at grinding the Helegrod set once I have the majority of Mirkwood out the way – but with the end of radiance now on the horizon, I’m less inclined to put in the time…that said, the Helegrod sets, even without considering radiance, look to be a good bet when compared to any of the other end-game armour sets.

Elsewhere, I finally got my lore-master enough radiance to join a couple of my kin’s raids into Barad Guldur. For the uninitiated, this 12-man raid in Mirkwood, currently requires a minimum of 115 radiance for a toon to be effective, so I used some ‘Superior Third Marks’ and picked up the Helegrod 25-radiance ‘Beast-Master’ head piece for my LM, bringing her total radiance up to 120. Two runs through ‘The Gauntlet’ later, and I can honestly say “What damn good fun!”. That said, we’ve so far failed to bring down Durchest, but the last attempt was oh-so-close….one of our minstrels managed to acquire aggro near the end of the fight, and Durchest then proceeded to wipe us…grrrrr!

I’ve had a bit of an epiphany, in fact. I’m now a raider. When I say that, I mean that the part of LoTRO that I enjoy the most is raiding. In game, I’m now at my happiest (most of the time) with my headset on, running group content with kinnies. That’s some change, as I always used to be an alto-holic – more interested in levelling than grouping. Is this a change for the better? Only time will tell, I guess…

So, what else have I been up to? Well, running my toons through Enedwaith, mostly. I’ve yet to hit kindred with either of the Enedwaith factions (the Grey Company and the Algraig) – but I’m not far off. I particularly want the shield/pocket item combo for my guardian – but that will be another week or two coming. And after that….? I might just try to grind out a couple of Helegrod armour sets…
