Goodnight Watcher

There are, at the time of writing, three radiance-gated 12-man raids in LoTRO:

  1. The Vile Maw (the Watcher)
  2. Dar Narbugud (final boss is The Mistress of Pestilence)
  3. Barad Guldur (final boss is The Lieutenant of Dol Guldur).

I have now completed both 1 and 2. To find out the latest, read on…

Monday evening was a good evening. My kin have been trying to bring down The Watcher – on and off – for the past few months. We’re a casual raiding bunch, and I’d say we’re tried about twenty odd runs covering five or six different events. Anyhow, on Monday we did it – killed ‘The Watcher’. I started off on my guardian, but due to some necessary tweaking, ended up on my lore-master for the successful run.

For the majority of us, it was our first time bringing the Watcher down. My major ambitions coming into this year were (1) kill the Watcher, and (2) kill the Lieutenant. To manage one of them this early in the year is a real bonus! Oh yes, and to cap the night, we followed the Vile Maw with a trip to the turtle – which we completed without a hitch. So two raids completed in one night. I went to bed happy.

Mistress of Pestilence – Downed!

Well, my shiny new PC arrived last week. I’m very happy with it. But what I neglected to check when I ordered it, was the power output of the PSU (Power Supply Unit). The supplied PSU outputs a mere 300W, and my graphics card requires a PSU with an output of at least 400W. So, new PSU on order – *sigh*. In the meantime, I’ve been plodding along using my kids’ PC which, I truth be told, has at least allowed me to get in-game.

My major news from the last couple of weeks is that I was finally in on a run all the way through Dar-Narbugud with my kin, which brought down the Mistress [of Pestilence]. Added to that, my LM also completed the ‘Reaver of Dar Narbugud’ deed! The only slight downside is that I still haven’t won a roll for one of the 20 radiance armour pieces, even after rolling 20-odd times – but am I worried…? Nope!

The EU version of the autumn festival finished here in the EU last week, and despite trying everyday, I didn’t manage to get the skeleton horse on any other toon other than my warden. Still, one skeleton horse/pony is better than none – with the 1 in 100 chance of one dropping, per day, one is still an achievement.

I’ve also managed to run the majority of the newly revamped ‘Classic’ instances, at this stage. I’ve so far managed:

  • The School (HM)
  • The Library (NM)
  • Helegrod Giant-Wing (HM)
  • Helegrod Drake-Wing (HM)
  • Annuminas – Ost Elendil (HM)
  • Annuminas – Haudh Valandil (HM)
  • Great Barrow – The Maze (HM)
  • Great Barrow – Thadur (HM)

But crash-and-burned whilst trying to complete:

  • Helegrod Spider-Wing
  • Great Barrow – Sambrog

I’ve yet to try:

  • Helegrod Dragon Wing (24 man)
  • Annuminas – Glinghant

Out of the above completed instances, I’ve so far picked up a total of 8 Superior Third Marks – but have yet to decide what to do with them. I’m torn between bartering them for a Symbol of Celebrimbor, or for the new Helegrod armour pieces. Anyhow, so far I have to say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the re-vamped Classics – they’re new, challenging and entertaining.

In my ‘spare’ time I’ve been working my way through Enedwaith on my main. I’ve now found all of the stables and am probably about two-thirds of the way through the zone on my main. So far, I have to say, it’s been very enjoyable – if a little ‘unchallenging’.

More Ups and Downs

First the ups. My level 35 burglar finally reached ‘Supreme Master’ farmer last Saturday – it’s been a long time coming! I’ve been busy both farming and then cooking over the last week, as my level of raiding has dramatically increased. I’ve actually spent three nights raiding out of the last six.

It started last Thursday when I took my LM into Dar Narbugud for the first time. We got past the troll bosses, and hence the furthest I’d been with any of my toons, and then on past all of the orc bosses, stopping just before ‘the Blind One’. We went back again on Saturday night, brought down the Blind One at the second attempt, and then…I had to leave the raid due to a real life call. My kinnies found a replacement, but couldn’t bring down ‘the Mistress of Pestilence’ – I’m not sure whether my presence would have helped or not – probably not! Anyhow, we’ll be heading back for another attempt this coming Thursday…

And the downs? Yesterday we had another bash at ‘the Watcher’ too – but despite always getting to stage three of the fight, we never looked like bringing Mr Squid down – we (the kin) clearly have a lot of learing to do. I also got dragged into the final boss (Demafaer) in Sammath Gul on Sunday night – and we wiped four times. How come I’ve never wiped on this guy before? I mean, I even picked up my Glass Flask off him last week, and now we can’t even get close to killing him?!? weird – and more than a little frustrating.

Elsewhere, I got the Sword Hall run that I needed out-of-the-way on Wednesday last week, so my LM now has 65 radiance. I’ve decided that I’ll need another 25 radiance armour piece, for sure, as I was burning hope tokens to beat the band in DN. I’m going to try ‘Warg Pens’ tomorrow night, mainly for the quests, but the Dol Guldur medallions will hopefully see me some way to that second Mirkwood armour piece.

Finally, I got my 10 Empathy on my guard – by murdering an awful lot of wargs in Mirkwood. Happy Days!

Oh yes – and still no sign of the EU Free-2-Play. Do I care? Not in the slightest!
